A message

from Dr. Jane Goodall

Prologue written by Dr. Jane Goodall:
I love this book because of its strong message to children, encouraging them to follow their dreams. I was lucky, for not only did I get to Africa, but I became the first person to study wild chimpanzees, to realize how like ours their behavior is.

These observations helped to convince an increasing number of scientists that we humans are part of the amazing animal kingdom, and not quite separate from all the other animals as was once thought. Cats, dogs, cows, chickens – and all the others have feelings, such as happiness and sadness, very similar to ours, and they all feel pain.

I love this book because of its strong message to children, encouraging them to follow their dreams.

I hope that all the children reading this book will become members of our Roots&Shoots program for young people for this will help them understand how we humans are harming the other animals and their habitats, and inspire them with a desire to help, to make this a better world for all.

Above all they will learn that every one of us makes a difference in the world, every day, and we have a choice as to what sort of difference we will make.
