Storytelling and activities
at schools in Spain
If you are a teacher and are looking for a special activity for elementary school, that will inspire your students, you can join all of those schools who have already counted on me to do so.
Through Dr. Jane Goodall´s story, I work the emotional intelligence (EI), self-knowledge, confidence and professions (What they want to be when they grow up?).
On one hand, they learn something about the fascinating life of Dr. Jane Goodall, primatologist and UN Messenger of Peace and, on the other hand, they will learn about themselves.
This activity breaks through the daily routine at school and that is the reason why children are more receptive. While they listen to the book, they start identifying themselves with the characters and at the same time discover their own dreams.
They love it and I love seeing their faces full of joy.
One of the goals many want to achieve inside a classroom is a state of “mindfulness”. That is why I sometimes, after introducing myself, start a small session of "mindfulness". Doing so, makes the children focus on the present moment while they concentrate on their breathing.
It´s amazing how their concentration levels goes up after a few minutes from something as simple as feeling and hearing your own breath.
Below I explain the dynamics of the activity:
- I read the book to them (they listen)
- I conduct a questionnaire (they respond)
- I ask them about their dreams (they think)
- I give them a piece of paper where they let their creativity flow (they draw)
Finally, I show them "the box of dreams" where I store all of the dreams so that they don´t get lost. They love it and I love seeing their faces full of joy.
The storytelling along with the activities lasts between 45-60 minutes and is ideal for elementary school (recommended age: 6-11 years old).
I also have the book available in other languages and I offer the same activity in Spanish and German.
Additionally, I collaborate with the Jane Goodall Institute and there are several projects that are very interesting which can be worked on in class:
- Mobile Recycling – A cell phone recycling campaign
- Roots & Shoots – A global youth-led program whose objective is to improve the world
- Jane Goodall Institute – Research, education and conservation of chimpanzees in Africa
- Adopt a Chimpanzee – Chimpanzee adoption program
